Biography
Dr. Chung-Hsien Kuo received his Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from National Taiwan University, in 1999. Dr. Kuo served as a full time Assistant Engineer at the Department of Fluid System, An-Feng Hot Strip Mill Co. Ltd. from 1992 to 1993, and he served as a part time Technical Support Engineer at Ixon Technology from 1997 to 1998. Dr. Kuo has been a faculty member for over 20 years. Dr. Kuo was with an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tungnan Junior College from 1999 to 2000; an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Chang Gung University (CGU) from 2000 to 2005; an Associate Professor at the Graduate Institute of Medical Mechatronics, CGU from 2005 to 2007; an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) from 2007 to 2012. In 2012, Dr. Kuo was promoted as a Full Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, NTUST. During Dr. Kuo’s work at NTUST, he served as the Chairman of Graduate Institute of Biomedical Engineering from 2013 to 2018; the Chairman of Department of Electrical Engineering from 2018 to 2021. Dr. Kuo also hosted two university level research centers, and he served as the Director of Industry 4.0 Center from 2016 to 2021; the Director of Center for Cyber-physical System Innovation (CPSi, a featured areas research center program within the framework of the Higher Education Sprout Project by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan) from 2018 to 2021. Since August 2021, Dr. Kuo has been with the National Taiwan University, where he is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is hosting the Autonomous & Soft Robotics Laboratory (ASR Lab.) and his research interests include autonomous systems, novel soft robot design, advanced control systems, hybrid robot design combining rigid and soft machines, computer vision and visual servoing, and autonomous manipulation with AI approaches. Dr. Kuo is active in the academic societies. Dr. Kuo served as the Vice Director of IEEE SMC Society Technical Committee on Medical Mechatronics from 2006; the board members of Chinese Institute of Automation Engineers (from 2016), Chinese Automatic Control Society (from 2017) and Robotics Society of Taiwan (from 2009). Dr. Kuo was also the President of Robotics Society of Taiwan (RST) during 2020 January to 2023 November. His humanoid robot team (HuroEvolution) received 10 Awards of the Worldwide RoboCup Humanoid League during 2013 – 2017, including 1st Place of the Technical Challenge and 2nd Place of the Soccer Game of the AdultSize League in 2013 (Netherland); 1st Place of the Technical Challenge and 2nd Place of the Soccer Game of the AdultSize League in 2014 (Brazil); 1st Place of the Technical Challenge and 2nd Place of the Soccer Game of the TeenSize League and 2nd Place of the Technical Challenge of the AdultSize League as well as the 3rd Place of the Best Humanoid Competition in 2015 (China); 2nd Place of the Soccer Game of the TeenSize League in 2016 (Germany); 2nd Place of the Soccer Game of the TeenSize League in 2017 (Japan).
